# Grow a seed audience from newsletter subscribers

Each new subscriber joins a Customer Match list that seeds targeting towards people who resemble your readers.

When this happens

New Submission on your "Newsletter signup" form

Do this

Add the subscriber's email to a Customer Match list in Google Ads

One-directional. A submission triggers the action — nothing is written back into your form.

A newsletter subscriber has already done the thing paid media is trying to buy: come back on purpose. Handing that list of addresses to Google Ads gives the system a clear picture of who is worth finding more of, rather than a broad keyword's best guess.

The embedded signup block does the collecting and the Zap keeps the list current without a monthly export. Publishers and small marketing teams treat it as a seed for reach — the point is finding people who resemble subscribers, not just advertising to the subscribers themselves.

## Setting it up

1. 1

Embed the signup form where subscriptions actually happen — article footer, slide-in, or an inline block partway down the page — using the two-line embed.

2. 2

Add a line of copy at the point of signup saying addresses may be used to build advertising audiences; a subscribe box on its own is not permission for ad targeting.

3. 3

In Audience manager, create a customer list called "Newsletter subscribers" with a long membership duration, since this is a seed list rather than a short retargeting pool.

4. 4

Set up the Zap: formformform New Submission on the signup form, then Google Ads "Add Contact to Customer List".

5. 5

Map Email Address to the email input and First Name to the first name input. There is no surname on this form, and Customer Match will still match on email alone.

6. 6

Add a Zapier path on Topics You're Interested In if you want one seed list per subject area rather than a single pooled audience.

7. 7

Attach the list as an audience signal on Performance Max campaigns or as a segment on Display, so Google expands from it instead of only serving to the members.

8. 8

Subscribe with a fresh address, confirm the Zap succeeded, then check the list again in a couple of days — a new segment takes time to process and shows no size at first.

## What maps where

## Variations worth knowing

Stop advertising the signup to people who signed up

Attach the same list as an exclusion on the campaigns promoting the newsletter itself. Nobody who already subscribed sees another subscribe ad, and the acquisition budget goes entirely to readers who have not joined yet.

One seed per subject, not one for everything

Branch on Topics You're Interested In so readers who chose product news seed one list and design readers another. Campaigns promoting different content then expand from an audience that actually reads that subject, which is a sharper starting point than a mixed list.

## If something isn't arriving

The Google Ads list contains addresses my email tool never confirmed.

The Zap fires on submission, so it runs before any double opt-in confirmation. If confirmation matters to you, hold the Google Ads step behind a Zapier Delay and a lookup in your email tool, and only add the contact once the subscription is confirmed there.

Match rate looks poor against the number of subscribers.

Typos, role addresses and mailboxes on domains never tied to a Google account all fail to match, and that is normal. Keep the email field validated on the form, add First Name to help matching, and measure the campaign's reach rather than the segment's headcount.

## Frequently asked questions

Do I need consent to add newsletter subscribers to Google Ads?

Ticking a newsletter box is not consent to be targeted with ads. Under GDPR you need a lawful basis for that specific use, so state it at the point of signup, keep a record of who agreed, and filter the Zap so only those people are sent.

Will my subscribers start seeing ads because they signed up?

If you attach the list as a targeting segment, yes. Used as an audience signal, Google treats it as a starting point and reaches beyond it, though members can still be served. Write creative that works for a reader as well as a stranger.

Does anything flow back from Google Ads into the form?

Nothing at all. The connection is one-directional: a submission triggers the contact being added, and Google Ads never writes to your form or your responses. Re-adding an address that is already in the list does not create a duplicate member.

## Build the form first

The automation needs somewhere to fire from. Publish a form, connect it once, and every submission from then on runs this flow.
